Dr. Jeroen Hopster was a postdoctoral researcher at Utrecht University, and now he is doing research on climate ethics at the University of Graz. In February 2019 he defended his dissertation 'Moral Objectivity: Origins and Foundations'.
In this episode, we focus mostly on moral realism. We ask what it really is about, and what an evolutionary perspective brings to the table. We also discuss in what ways morality can be objective. And we deal with specific applied ethics topics, like climate ethics, the ethics of pandemics applied specifically to covid-19, and animal rights.

Dr. Bernard Wood is University Professor of Human Origins at the Center for the Advanced Study of Human Paleobiology at the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences at George Washington University. He is a medically trained paleoanthropologist. His research interests are all related in one way or another to a long-standing pre-occupation with hominin systematics. How can we improve our ability to recognize species in the fossil record, and how can we do a better job of reconstructing their phylogenetic relationships? His current research interests are phylogeny reconstruction, hominin systematics, dental evolution, evolvability within the hominin clade, and diet reconstruction. He’s the author of several books, including Human Evolution: A Very Short Introduction, and Human Evolution: A Guide to Fossil Evidence.
In this episode, we talk about paleoanthropology, and the field of human systematics. We talk about the hominin clade and the genus Homo, and how we distinguish between different species. We discuss some of the main challenges in reconstructing human evolution. And we also touch on topics such as hominin migrations, the relationship between H. sapiens and the Neanderthals, and the limitations in studying ancient behavior.

Dr. Jeffrey Barrett is Chancellor’s Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of California, Irvine. His current research involves two general topics. First, he is interested in attempts to resolve the measurement problem in quantum mechanics. Second, he is interested in using decision theory and evolutionary game theory to model basic features of empirical and mathematical inquiry. In particular, he has been modeling the coevolution of descriptive language and predictive theory in the context of Skyrms-Lewis sender-receiver games.
In this episode, we talk about the philosophy of quantum mechanics. First, Dr. Barrett walks us through some of its theoretical bases, and its history starting in the 19th century. We also take the time to talk a bit about how we know something is real in science. Then, we discuss a series of issues and formulations in quantum mechanics, like the measurement problem, the Single-Mind formulation, the Many-Worlds hypothesis, and the Many-Minds formulation of quantum mechanics. We also refer to string theory, and some of its mains problems and limitations. Finally, we ask if quantum mechanics forces us to accept the nature of the world as probabilistic and/or random, and also if we can predict human behavior with Physics theories.

Dr. Hugo Mercier is a research scientist at the CNRS – Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (Institut Jean Nicod), where he works with the Evolution and Social Cognition team. Most of his work so far has focused on the function and workings of reasoning. He’s the author of The Enigma of Reason, and, more recently, Not Born Yesterday: The Science of Who We Trust and What We Believe.
In this episode, we center on Dr. Mercier’s recent book, Not Born Yesterday. He walks us through the recent science that goes against the prevailing narrative in social psychology, that we are extremely gullible, and easily manipulated and deceived. We explore examples in the domains of politics, social media, science, and others.

Dr. Sarah Garfinkel is Professor of neuroscience and psychiatry based at the University of Sussex and the Brighton and Sussex Medical School. Her research is focused on the link between interoception and emotion and memory. In 2018, she was selected as one of 11 researchers on the Nature Index 2018 Rising Stars. Dr. Garfinkel's research focuses on interoception, the ability to sense one’s own body, and the link between interoception and the brain. She specifically focuses on the heartbeat, and has shown that the heartbeat, and perception thereof, influences the way people process fear. Her research has furthermore shown that autistic people experience difficulty judging their heartbeat, causing anxiety and stress. This research has led to the development of a new therapy technique called interoception-directed therapy, which aims to reduce anxiety in autistic individuals.
In this episode, we talk about interoception, and how it connects with emotion, cognition, and mental health. We first answer what interoception is about, and how it connects with how the brain works. We also discuss how emotions work, and connect them with decision-making, and refer to memory and cognition. We then get into the association between interoception and mental health and psychiatry, and we go through several examples of mental disorder, like PTSD, addiction, autism, depression, and anxiety.

Dr. Cristine Legare is a professor of psychology and the director of the Evolution, Variation, and Ontogeny of Learning Laboratory at The University of Texas at Austin. Her research examines how the human mind enables us to learn, create, and transmit culture. She conducts comparisons across age, culture, and species to address fundamental questions about cognitive and cultural evolution.
In this episode, we first talk about the phylogenetic and ontogenetic bases of culture. We also refer to the cognitive bases of culture. We ask if isolated individuals would ever develop culture. We discuss how children acquire culture; core knowledge, and how it varies across societies; causal learning; imitation; and natural and supernatural explanatory frameworks. We then address what renders it so difficult for people to accept and understand evolution by natural selection.

UPDATE: THANK YOU + I NEED MORE SUPPORT
Saturday Apr 25, 2020
Saturday Apr 25, 2020
All of you were extremely kind and helpful again last month. I feel very humbled and grateful from the bottom of my heart to you all!
But I am still going through hard times. I really do hope this is the last time I have to ask for your help. In order to sustain the channel, and even to support myself and my girlfriend I need your help.
My girlfriend has just lost her job, and I will be needing to fully support her and myself for whatever amount of time needed, until things get better. I am trying to get another job to complement what I am getting from the channel, but you certainly now that that is extremely difficult at the moment, due to the impact coronavirus is having on the economy across the globe. I am going to try my very best, but I am desperate.
If you appreciate what I am doing, and have some money you could spare, please help me!
For these past two years, I have brought on the show some of the top academics/scholars in a diversity of fields, like Psychology, Anthropology, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Philosophy, and even Literary Studies.
On my show, you can certainly find informative, well-researched, engaging, and fun interviews on topics that will feed your intellectual interest.
My income for these past two years has depended completely on the donations made by my charitable patrons and Paypal supporters, but, unfortunately, it is not enough. In today’s society, scientific literacy is ever more important, and, hopefully, I have been contributing to spread knowledge outside of academia in a format that I try my best to be accessible even to laypeople.
So I ask you to please consider supporting me on the platforms I will link down below. I am leaving a link to my Patreon page and links to monthly subscriptions on Paypal, and also a link to Paypal for a one-time big donation, if you prefer, if any of you would be generous enough to become a patron or give me a one-time big donation.

Dr. Holger Wiese is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Durham University, where he runs an EEG lab. He is mainly interested in face recognition and face perception. He investigates how we recognize familiar faces, how we learn new facial identities, why people are more accurate at remembering faces of their own ethnic and age groups, how we perceive age, , and attractiveness in unfamiliar faces, and how our knowledge about other people is structured in semantic memory. He is also interested in how these aspects of face and person perception change across the adult lifespan.
In this episode, we talk about face recognition. We first refer to its possible function(s), and how it is processed in the brain. We discuss what information people get from faces, and the phenomena of face familiarity and what makes faces distinctive. We also refer to biases in face recognition, and if they can me modified. Other topics include: cognitive ageing and difficulties in face recognition; the relationship between semantic memory and face memory; male and female faces; and facial attractiveness.

Dr. Jeff McMahan is White’s Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Oxford. He specializes in Practical Ethics, Political Philosophy, and Ethics. He’s the author of books like The Morality of Nationalism, The Ethics of Killing: Problems at the Margins of Life, and Killing in War.
In this episode, we talk about the ethics of killing. We first clarify what is death and what constitutes an act of killing. We discuss the connection between psychological capacities and moral status, and the notions of personal identity, egoistic concern, and the interest in one’s future. We address abortion and infanticide. We then get into a discussion surrounding how we decide that a life is worth living. We also include topics like personality variability, and end-of-life cases life euthanasia and suicide. We talk about what is a “good life” for people and other animals. Finally, we explore what is ethically different between killing and letting die.

Dr. Benjamin Bergen is Professor of Cognitive Science at the University of California San Diego. His research interests include language comprehension and production, including grammar, word meaning, metaphor, profanity, and talking while driving. He’s the author of the books Louder Than Words: The New Science of How the Mind Makes Meaning, and What the F: What Swearing Reveals About Our Language, Our Brains, and Ourselves.
In this episode, we focus on embodied cognition and language. First, we tackle what embodied cognition is about. Then, we get into language (and meaning). We refer to the embodied simulation hypothesis, and to experiments to know the mental simulations people are performing. We also discuss the drawbacks of mentalese (language of thought). We ask if language influences thought, and how. We talk about different cognitive styles – verbalizers, and visualizers – and ask how can we even understand each other. In the final parts of the interview, we talk about how we get from simulations of physical aspects of existence to abstract concepts; what is embodied simulation really good for; and if we can improve AI systems with knowledge from embodied cognition and simulation.

Dr. Khandis Blake is an evolutionary social psychologist at The University of Melbourne. She is an expert in gendered conflict. Her research considers how behavior, attitudes, and culture associated with gender are influenced by the interplay between nature, nurture, and the state of the economy. Herself and her collaborators propose that gendered phenomena such as inimate partner violence, attitudes toward abortion, and male-male aggression arise partially out of market conditions that shift the bargaining power between men and women. Second, she investigates the causes and consequences of female competition and the conditions under which female sexualization elevates women's agency. Third, she develops methodological tools to advance the psychosocial study of female ovulation and ovarian hormones. Finally, she is interested in the social contexts eliciting aggression, especially male-to-female aggression and intimate partner violence.
In this episode, we talk about several issues regarding female intrasexual competition in the modern world, gender inequality, and feminism from an evolutionary perspective. We first discuss how women compete, and focus on aggressive behavior. We then talk about intimate partner violence. We cover income inequality and effects on women’s intrasexual competition at several different levels, like the use of cosmetics and social media. We also explore sexual objectification, and hypersexualization in the West and the negative effects it might have on women. Finally, we talk about integrating Women’s Studies with Evolutionary Psychology to better understand and tackle current feminist issues.
