Dr. Agner Fog is associate professor of computer science at Technical University of Denmark. Dr. Fog does research in Evolutionary Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology, Social systems and Computer Science. His current project is 'Theory of cultural change based on evolutionary psychology, evolutionary biology, and cultural evolution.' He’s the author of “Warlike and Peaceful Societies: The Interaction of Genes and Culture”.
In this episode, we talk about warlike and peaceful societies. We discuss if war is part of human nature, and the ecological conditions that favor war and peace. We also mention the social structure of warlike societies. We ask why most warriors and chiefs are men. We then get into regality theory, and the differences between what Dr. Fog calls regal and kungic societies. We talk about the different types of war, focusing mostly on civil wars, and we also about terrorism and counterterrorist measures. We also refer to the Long Peace, authoritarianism on the right and the left, and scaremongering (in mass media). Finally, we talk about why Scandinavian peoples are the happiest in the world, and if regality theory can help us prevent and end wars, and change political systems.

Dr. Marco Del Giudice is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of New Mexico. In his work he explores a wide range of topics at the intersection of human behavior, evolution, and development. His approach is interdisciplinary and driven by the quest for theoretical synthesis. Over the years he has developed some broad, integrative models: the Adaptive Calibration Model of individual differences in stress responsivity (with Bruce Ellis and Birdie Shirtcliff); an evolutionary-developmental model of differences in attachment styles; and a unifying life history framework for evolutionary psychopathology. Most of his current empirical work is devoted to testing, advancing, and refining these models with a variety of research methods. He’s the author of Evolutionary Psychopathology: A Unified Approach.
In this episode, we focus on psychological gender differences. We talk about play in males and females; differences in education and occupational choices, according to personality tendencies; assessing differences and similarities; gender stereotypes, and if they are right; the distinction between “” and “gender”, and if it is a useful one; evolutionary and socialization theories of differences; things that people from the socialization side get wrong about evolutionary psychology; animal models, and comparative psychology; and, finally, why it is important, not only for scientists but also to the general public, to study and learn about differences.

Dr. H. Clark Barrett is Professor in the Department of Anthropology, and the Director of the Center for Behavior, Evolution and Culture at UCLA. His research has focused on learning and conceptual development in several domains, including “theory of mind,” or the ability to make inferences about others’ thoughts and intentions, and learning about danger. He’s the author of the book The Shape of Thought: How Mental Adaptations Evolve.
In this episode, we talk about consciousness, theory of mind, moral judgment, and cross-cultural studies of the human mind. We start with consciousness, and we discuss the role that it plays and what functions it might serve from an evolutionary perspective. Then, we talk about theory of mind, and we question if a mentalistic basis of morality, and more specifically moral judgment, is found across all societies, or is culturally variable. In the second part of the talk, we mention the WEIRD problem, and how to improve the science of the human mind, develop a true cognitive science of the human mind, and improve psychological studies.

Julian De Freitas is a cognitive scientist in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. He studies social intelligence, with a focus on the self, strategic thinking, and ethics.
In this episode, we talk about the self, morality, and common knowledge. We start by tackling the questions of what is really the “self”, and the relationship between the self and moral behavior. Then we talk about moral judgment, the optimality bias, common intuitions about the moral nature of the self, and morality, happiness, and the meaning of life. We also discuss common knowledge from a cognitive scientific and game theoretical perspectives. We refer to the relationship among common knowledge, collective coordination, and strategic thinking; how common knowledge explains the bystander effect better than the traditional explanation; and common knowledge and charitable behavior. Finally, we discuss if beliefs really cause behavior.

Dr. Robyn Bluhm is an Associate Professor with a joint appointment in the Department of Philosophy and Lyman Briggs College at Michigan State University. Her research examines philosophical issues in neuroscience and in medicine, with a particular focus on the relationship between ethical and epistemological questions in these areas. She has written extensively on the philosophy of evidence-based practice and on the use of functional neuroimaging in psychiatry. She is a co-editor of Neurofeminism: Issues at the Intersection of Feminist Theory and Cognitive Science.
In this episode, we focus on the philosophy of medicine, and the philosophy of neuroscience and the neuroscience of gender. We go through some general topics in the philosophy of medicine, like evidence-based medicine, if medicine is a science, how it is influenced by culture, the limitations of the integration between research and practice, the difference between medicine and healthcare, and how philosophy can improve healthcare practice. Then we get into neuroscience, and refer to the limitations of current imaging techniques, and discuss the neuroscience of gender, neurosexism, neurofeminism, and the impact of studying differences on society.

Dr. Laura Crucianelli currently works as a postdoctoral researcher in Henrik Erhsson’s lab at the Karolinska Institute, in Stockholm. Dr. Crucianelli completed her PhD at the Department of Psychology, University of Hertfordshire, and in collaboration with University College London under the supervision of Dr. Paul Jenkinson and Dr. Katerina Fotopoulou. Her PhD project investigated affective touch, sense of body ownership and interoceptive awareness in both healthy and clinical populations.
In this episode, we talk about interoception, and how it can relate to some psychiatric conditions. We go through topics like affective touch, and the sense of body ownership. We talk about the Rubber Hand Illusion, and what it tells us about interoception. We also touch on minimal self-awareness, and how we can communicate emotions through touch. And, finally, we discuss what goes wrong in some clinical populations, focusing on anorexia nervosa patients, and how we might be able to improve psychiatric practices in the future.

Dr. Peter Jonason is Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Padova, Italy. By training he is a social/personality psychologist who uses evolutionary theory to derive predictions and account for observable phenomena in (mostly) personality, individual differences, mating strategies, and sexuality.
In this episode, we focus on human mating behavior. We first talk about the relationship between the Dark Triad traits and mating behavior, and also the costs associated with them. Then we go through some specific topics, like the willingness to get caught in an extra-pair relationship, the mate preferences of educated people, and what we can learn about human mating by studying the booty call. Finally, we talk about some of the psychological barriers to accepting findings in evolutionary psychology.

Dr. Colin Holbrook is Assistant Professor of Cognitive and Information Sciences at the University of California Merced. He researches decision-making under contexts of threat, with particular focus on political orientation, group prejudice, and the representation of mental states.
In this episode, we focus on the psychology of threat, threat detection, threat salience, and response to threat. We first ask what threat is really about, and the kinds of threat that exist, as well as how people respond to it. We also talk about how threat might change group dynamics of competition and cooperation, and the effects that religiousness has on the psychological impact of threat. Finally, we mention some of the topics that Dr. Holbrook is exploring in the domain of human-robot interaction, something that, if all goes well, we will be digging deeper later this year.

Dr. Joseph Henrich is Professor and chair of The Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. He is interested in the question of how humans evolved from "being a relatively unremarkable primate a few million years ago to the most successful species on the globe", and how culture affected our genetic development. He is also the author of The Secret of Our Success and The WEIRDest People in World.
In this episode, we talk about some of the main topics in Dr. Henrich’s vast and interdisciplinary work. We first discuss the trouble with trying to integrate knowledge from different social sciences. Then, we talk about biases in cultural transmission, and genetic and cultural evolution. We also discuss the evolution of human cooperation, how societies scaled up, and the role of prosocial religions and Big Gods. We also talk about the Cultural Brain Hypothesis, collective intelligence, and a cultural evolutionary take on IQ. We characterize WEIRD psychology, comment a bit on Cecilia Heyes’ take on cultural evolutionary theory, and finally get Dr. Henrich’s take on group selection.

We talk about personality and risk-taking; univariate and multivariate analyses; the interpersonal circumplex model; cooperation and competition; and gender differences in verbal and non-verbal communication.
This is a 2-part talk on gender differences. The second part will probably be released in August 2020.

Dr. H. Clark Barrett is Professor in the Department of Anthropology, and the Director of the Center for Behavior, Evolution and Culture at UCLA. He is a biological anthropologist specializing in evolutionary psychology, the study of the mind’s evolved mechanisms and processes. In his work he uses methods from anthropology and psychology to examine universals and variation in how thinking develops across cultures. He conducts field research among the Shuar, an indigenous culture in southeast Ecuador, as well as in Los Angeles. His research has focused on learning and conceptual development in several domains, including “theory of mind,” or the ability to make inferences about others’ thoughts and intentions, and learning about danger. He has also collaborated with a variety of anthropologists, psychologists, and other social scientists on a variety of topics ranging from infant-directed speech to the evolution of morality, and supervise graduate projects on the evolution of cognition. He’s the author of the book The Shape of Thought: How Mental Adaptations Evolve.
In this episode, we focus on the topic of mental adaptations. We first ask what a mental adaptation is. We also refer to modularity of mind, and talk about domain-specific and domain-general modules. Toward the end, we discuss dual-systems theory, and the role that consciousness plays in decision-making.

Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman is a humanistic psychologist exploring the depths of human potential. He is interested in using his research to help all kinds of minds live a creative, fulfilling, and self-actualized life. He likes to share his enthusiasm of psychology through his teaching, writing, speaking, and podcast. He writes the column Beautiful Minds for Scientific American and hosts The Psychology Podcast, which has received over 10 million downloads. Dr. Kaufman’s writing has appeared in The Atlantic, Psychology Today, and Harvard Business Review. Dr. Kaufman’s books include Wired to Create: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Creative Mind (with Carolyn Gregoire), Ungifted: Intelligence Redefined, and, as editor, Twice Exceptional: Supporting and Educating Bright and Creative Students with Learning Difficulties and The Cambridge Handbook of Intelligence. His new book is Transcend: The New Science of Self-Actualization.
In this episode, we focus on Dr. Kaufman’s new book, Transcend. We talk about Mallow’s hierarchy of needs, and how it has been misinterpreted over the years. We refer to transcendence, self-actualization, and humanistic and positive psychology. We refer to how evolutionary psychology has neglected the study of transcendence, and other related topics. We go through different individual differences and how they influence how people approach these needs, including personality differences, differences in IQ and intelligence, and attachment styles. We also mention the dark and light triads of human personality. Finally, we talk about purpose, and humanity’s potential.

Dr. Melanie Meng Xue is assistant professor in the Social Science Division at New York University in Abu Dhabi. Her research lies at the intersection of economic history and political economy. She has studied the rise of gender-equitable beliefs and the deterioration of civil society in the context of imperial China. By tracing the impact of historical events over time and in various institutional settings, her work isolates the role of values, beliefs and norms in shaping economic and political disparities. Another strand of Dr. Meng Xue’s research concerns the decoding of folklore and mythology as a new approach to understanding historical values.
In this episode, we talk about how to study values, beliefs, and norms, and how they change over time, from a historical perspective. We go through the example of the history of China, and the transition from imperial China to communist China and State capitalist China, and we focus mostly on how gender beliefs changed over time.

Dr. Shaun Nichols is Professor in the Sage School of Philosophy at Cornell University. He works in philosophy of cognitive science. Most of his research concerns the psychological foundations of philosophical thought. Recently he’s been drawing on learning theory to try to understand how people acquire philosophically significant concepts and distinctions, especially in the domain of morality.
In this episode, we talk about morality. We approach it from a philosophical and scientific perspective. We discuss the role that emotions and other mental mechanisms play. We also refer to child development, learning, and human universals and the folk psychology of morality. Then, we talk about psychopathy and moral rationalism; the link between morality and violence; and the is-ought dichotomy. Finally, we discuss a possible new kind of moral realism.

Dr. Don Moore is the Lorraine Tyson Mitchell Professor of Communication and Leadership at the Haas School of Business, and a member of the Management of Organizations group, at UC Berkeley. Prior to Haas, Dr. Moore served on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business, where he held the Carnegie Bosch chair. His research interests focus on overconfidence, including when people think they’re better than they are, when they think they are better than others, and when they are too sure they know the truth. He’s the author of a new book, Perfectly Confident: How To Calibrate Your Decisions Wisely.
In this episode, we focus on Dr. Moore’s new book, and talk about confidence, overconfidence, and underconfidence. We also refer to the above-average effect, ambiguity aversion and risk aversion, overprecision, and the different kinds of overconfidence and underconfidence. Finally, we discuss the relationship between confidence and decision-making and emotions, and the ways by which we can try to calibrate our decisions wisely, applying it to business, politics, and personal relationships.

Dr. Ann-Sophie Barwich is Assistant Professor of History and Philosophy of Science and Cognitive Science at Indiana University Bloomington. She is a cognitive scientist and empirical philosopher & historian of science, technology, and the senses. She divides her brain-time between the Department of History & Philosophy of Science and the Cognitive Science Program. Estimated begin of lab (EEG/Olfactometry) in early 2021. She’s the author of Smellosophy: What the Nose tells the Mind.
In this episode, we start off by talking about the scientific method, how it evolved over time, the difficulties in defining or characterizing it. We refer to the fact that different branches of science and of philosophy of science approach their objects of study in different ways; the place for fiction in science, and how we should think about modelling in science; empirical success; a minority view on the replication crisis, and the importance of failure in the scientific process; falsification, and the demarcation problem. Then, we get into Dr. Barwich’s work on the sense of olfaction, how it works, and a new view it gives us of how the brain works more broadly, and also how it reframes certain questions and big topics in the philosophy of neuroscience.

Dr. Melinda Zeder is Curator Emeritus in the Department of Anthropology of the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. Her zooarchaeological research has revolutionized the understanding of animal domestication. She has conducted extensive fieldwork throughout the Near East, including in Iran, Israel, Turkey, and Syria. Her research focuses on the origins of plant and animal domestication, and the impacts of agriculture on human prehistory. She has also pioneered approaches that combine archaeological and genetic analyses of plant and animal remains from archaeological sites.
In this episode, we talk about zooarachaeology. We discuss topics such as domestication; if domestication of agriculture came first, and if the question even makes sense; the origins of agriculture, and the several different sites throughout the globe where it developed independently; the concept of niche construction, and how it applies to humans; and the Anthropocene.
