Dr. Jeff McMahan is White’s Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Oxford. He specializes in Practical Ethics, Political Philosophy, and Ethics. He’s the author of books like The Morality of Nationalism, The Ethics of Killing: Problems at the Margins of Life, and Killing in War.
In this episode, we focus on the killing in war, and the ethics of vegetarianism/veganism. About killing in ward, we address questions like what is a just and an unjust war, the circumstances where soldiers are morally justified to kill other soldiers, excusable conditions for participating in war, when civilians might be liable to being targeted by soldiers, coercion, and teaching moral philosophy to soldiers. In the second part, we discuss the ethics of vegetarianism, and we go through different objections to it, like the pleasure we derive from eating meat, the possibility of the extinction of farm animals, and raising animals in a humane way. We also talk about eating already dead animals, cannibalism, and lab-grown meat.

Dr. Paul Bloom is the Brooks and Suzanne Ragen Professor of psychology and cognitive science at Yale University. His research explores how children and adults understand the physical and social world, with special focus on language, morality, religion, fiction, and art. He is the author of books like How Children Learn the Meanings of Words (2000), How Pleasure Works: The New Science of Why We Like What We Like (2010), Just Babies: The Origins of Good and Evil (2013), and Against Empathy: The Case for Rational Compassion (2016).
In this episode, we talk about human nature and empathy. We start with a bit of developmental psychology, and discuss how we study babies, and how good they really are as models for human nature and the innateness of behavior. We also deal with mind-body dualism, and how people think about the physical world and the social world differently. We then get into moral development. We also talk about Against Empathy, the distinction between emotional and cognitive empathy, compassion, and psychopathy. We tackle the link between morality and violence, and we talk a little bit about dehumanization. Finally, Dr. Bloom lifts the veil on his upcoming book, about pleasure and/in pain.

In this episode, we talk about the psychological effects of media, and How Madness Shaped History. We start by talking about a bit of the history of how people tend to demonize new technology. We then get into specific technologies, like videogames, movies, and series. We address specifically 13 Reasons Why, and screen time. Finally, we cover come of the main topics of How Madness Shaped History, and discuss things like a distinction between madness, mental illness, and insanity; how complicated it is to diagnose historical figures; if mental health professionals should diagnose politicians; and how someone gets mad.

RECORDED ON NOVEMBER 2nd 2020.
Dr. Justin Tosi is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Texas Tech University. He works in social, political, legal, and moral philosophy, and especially on state legitimacy, special obligations, and social morality. He’s the author of Grandstanding: The Use and Abuse of Moral Talk (co-authored with Brandon Warmke).
In this episode, we talk about Grandstanding. We define grandstanding, and the different types of it. We talk about the distinction between moral grandstanding and virtue signaling. We ask if moral grandstanding is a recent phenomenon, and how we can abuse moral talk. Dr. Tosi explains the five ways people grandstand, and the social costs and benefits of it. We then tackle political grandstanding, and address the relationship between morality and politics, how politically active people can alienate moderates from politics, and people’s overconfidence in their moral and political views. We finish with some solutions to fight back against moral grandstanding.

In this episode, we discuss Big is Beautiful. We begin with the history of how the idea of small business being good, and big business bad, developed. Then we talk about the impact that small businesses really have in developing countries. We tackle income inequality, government subsidies for new businesses, and how regulations are weaker for small businesses. We discuss if small businesses really contribute that much to job creation, why have new startups rates been falling, and the situation in Europe in general, and Portugal in particular. Finally, we address how people feel about big business, supporting local production, and technological unemployment. We end up with what would a Big Business is Beautiful campaign would look like.

Dr. Warren Brown is Director of the Lee Edwards Travis Research Institute and Professor of Psychology in the Department of Doctoral Psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary. Currently, he is most actively involved in neuroscience research in two areas: (1) the cognitive and psychosocial disabilities in a congenital brain malformation called agenesis of the corpus callosum, and (2) the consequences in adults of a childhood hemispherectomy for the control of seizures. Brown has also studied functioning of the corpus callosum in dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease, and he has done research on brain wave changes associated with aging and dementia, language comprehension, dialysis treatment for kidney disease, and attention deficits in schizophrenia.
In this episode, we tackle some major theoretical questions in neuroscience. We discuss mind-brain dualism, reductionism and emergentism, embodied cognition, causality, and determinism and free will. We also talk about Dr. Brown’s research on the agenesis of the corpus calossum, the neuroscience of religion, and the relationship between science and religion.

Dr. Greg Eghigian is Professor of History at Pennsylvania State University. A historian of both the human sciences and modern Europe, he is particularly interested in how societies grapple with the questions and problems associated with modernity through the vehicles of science, technology, and medicine. His research has largely focused on the nature of power and the relationship between the state, science, and medicine in understanding and managing things such as disability, deviance, criminality, mental illness, and security.
In this episode, we talk about the history of mental illness and psychiatry. We discuss how to properly address the history of mental illness, and the cultural and political elements of mental illness. We address the questions of how mentally ill people were treated in premodern times, if people thought they could be cured, and if they were always stigmatized. Then, we talk about the advent of psychiatry, how people viewed suicide historically, Foucault and the exercise of power over the mentally ill, and the history of talk therapy. Finally, we ask if psychiatry is a science, and we discuss the history of institutionalization and the deinstitutionalization movement in psychiatry.

Dr. Daniel Kruger is Research Investigator in the Population Studies Center at the University of Michigan. He applies evolutionary principles to advance the understanding of a wide range of human psychology and behavior. Much of his work is founded on Life History Theory, which provides a powerful framework for understanding individual variation. He pursues both basic research to advance theory as well as applied projects that leverage the most powerful theoretical framework in the life sciences to promote human well-being and sustainability.
In this episode, we talk about life history theory, and its application in evolutionary psychology. We discuss mating and parenting effort, and differences in life history strategies. We also talk about the evolved psychology of time perspective. We mention how life history theory helps us better understand certain modern health issues. And, finally, we talk about postcoital behaviors, and differences related to them.

Dr. Gordon Pennycook is Assistant Professor of Behavioural Science at University of Regina’s Hill/Levene Schools of Business. He’s also an Associate Member of the Department of Psychology. He’s a member of the editorial board for Thinking & Reasoning and a consulting editor for Judgment and Decision Making. His research focus is on reasoning and decision-making, broadly defined. He investigates the distinction between intuitive processes (“gut feelings”) and more deliberative (“analytic”) reasoning processes and is principally interested in the causes (a) and consequences (b) of analytic thinking. Dr. Pennycook has published on religious belief, sleep paralysis, morality, creativity, smartphone use, health beliefs (e.g., homeopathy), language use among climate change deniers, pseudo-profound bullshit, delusional ideation, fake news (and disinformation more broadly), political ideology, and science beliefs.
In this episode, we first talk about dual-process theory, reasoning and rationality, motivated reasoning, the Dunning-Kruger effect, and the analytic cognitive style and ability. We then go through what characterizes pseudo-profound bullshit in terms of discourse, the language of climate change deniers, and fake news and misinformation (particularly on the internet).

Dr. Paul Eastwick is Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Eastwick’s research investigates how people initiate romantic relationships and the psychological mechanisms that help romantic partners to remain committed and attached. One of his research programs examines how the qualities that people say are critically important to them in a romantic partner—their ideal partner preferences—direct romantic partner selection and retention. He is also interested in exploring how close relationships research can inform evolutionary psychological approaches (and vice versa), especially with respect to the way that relationships grow and develop over time.
In this episode, we talk about close relationships, and the interrelation between relationship science and evolutionary psychology. Topics include pair-bonding; short-term and long-term relationships; what we can learn from speed-dating studies; the Relationship Coordination and Strategic Timing (ReCAST) Model; and what males relationships last, and if people are good at predicting how romantic breakups will affect them emotionally.

Dr. Brian Hare is a professor of evolutionary anthropology at Duke University. He researches the evolution of cognition by studying both humans, our close relatives the primates (especially bonobos and chimpanzees), and species whose cognition converged with our own (primarily domestic dogs). He founded and co-directs the Duke Canine Cognition Center. He’s the author of several books, including the most recent one, Survival of the Friendliest: Understanding Our Origins and Rediscovering Our Common Humanity.
In this episode, we talk about his book, Survival of the Friendliest. First, we go through some of the psychological mechanism that allow for our friendliness, and later we also refer to empathy, self-control, and theory of mind. We discuss the process of self-domestication. We also talk about simianization, Social Dominance Orientation (SDO) and Right Wing Authoritarianism (RWA), and ways to increase our friendliness toward out-groups.

Dr. Michael Taborsky is the Director of the Behavioural Ecology Department and Co-director of the Institute of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Bern, Switzerland. His major research focus is the adaptive function of behavior, with emphasis on cooperation and conflict, sociality and sexual reproduction.
In this episode, we talk about eusociality, and how it might tie back to the evolution of organisms, and the division of labor between specialized cells. We also discuss the evolution of altruism, and the many evolutionary mechanisms behind it, like kin selection, reciprocity, and group selection. We focus on generalized reciprocity and unconditional prosociality. Then, we move on to talk about sexual reproduction, how it evolved, fixed and plastic reproductive strategies, and its relationship with life history phenotypes. Finally, we mention the evolution cooperative breeding.
