Dr. Frederick Coolidge is Professor of Psychology and Co-Director of Undergraduate Education in Psychology at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. He teaches introductory and advanced undergraduate statistics, cognitive evolution, evolutionary neuropsychology, abnormal psychology, and sleep and dreams.

Rick Shenkman is the founder of George Washington University's History News Network, the website that features leading historians' perspectives on current events. He is a New York Times best-selling author of seven history books. His latest book is Political Animals: How Our Stone-Age Brain Gets in the Way of Smart Politics. Mr. Shenkman is an Emmy award-winning investigative reporter and the former managing editor of KIRO-TV, the CBS affiliate in Seattle. In 1997 he was the host, writer and producer of a prime-time series for The Learning Channel inspired by his books on myths. In 2008 he was elected a Fellow of the Society of American Historians. He gives lectures at colleges around the country on several topics, including American myths and presidential politics.
In this episode, we talk about Political Animals. Dr. Evert Van de Vliert received his PhD from the Free University in Amsterdam in 1973 and held teacher and researcher positions at the same university, at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and at the Royal Military Academy in the Netherlands. He served as chairman of the Dutch Research Association of Social and Organizational Psychologists (1984–1989) and as research director of the Kurt Lewin Institute (1993–1996). At present, he is professor emeritus of organizational psychology at the University of Groningen in The Netherlands. His current research concentrates on cross-national comparisons, with an emphasis on the impact of cold, temperate, and hot climates on national and organizational cultures.
In this episode, we talk the climato-economic approach to culture. The interview is divided into five sections: an introduction to the climato-economic niche model to culture; how the environment influences family constitution and gender roles; work and organizations (including political organizations); how cultures changes with climate variation; and exceptions and limitations of the model.

Dr. Jacob Stegenga is a Reader in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge. He has published widely on fundamental topics in reasoning and rationality and philosophical problems in medicine and biology. Prior to joining Cambridge he taught in the United States and Canada, and he received his PhD from the University of California San Diego. He is the author of Medical Nihilism and Care and Cure: An Introduction to Philosophy of Medicine, and he is currently writing a book on the sciences of sexual desire.
In this episode, we talk about philosophy of medicine. We first discuss what is philosophy of medicine, and then go through some of the major questions asked by philosophers of the discipline, like what is evidence, what is effectiveness, and what is a disease. We also talk about sources of evidence, like randomized control trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses, and we mention the plurality of reasoning strategies appealed to by the epidemiologist Sir Bradford Hill. Finally, we discuss what is medical nihilism, and we Dr. Stegenga gives us a short teaser to his next book, focused on the sciences of sexual desire.

Dr. Robert McCauley is the William Rand Kenan Jr. University Professor of Philosophy at the Center for Mind, Brain, and Culture, at Emory University.
Dr. George Graham is former Professor of Philosophy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Georgia State University, and the AC Reid Professor of Philosophy at Wake Forest University.
They are both authors of a recent book, Hearing Voices and Other Matters of the Mind: What Mental Abnormalities Can Teach Us About Religions.
In this episode, we focus on their book. We start by covering some of the concepts that they explore in the book, like ecumenical naturalism and purpose-driven continuity theory. We talk about the continuity between religious cognition, normal cognition and mental disorders, and what happens when mental disorders manifest in a religious context. We also discuss mental disorders more generally, and ask if they are illnesses, and if they are cultural. We tackle the issue of by-product, adaptation, and cultural group selection approaches to religion. We then go through the mental disorders covered in the book. We start with a condition that is also experienced by normal people: hallucinatory voices. We then talk about depression, Obsessive-compulsive disorder, and autism. Finally, we discuss if we really need to study people’s beliefs to understand religious phenomena, and end with how the framework laid-out in the book can be applied to studying terrorism, and in a clinical context.

Dr. Michael Anderson is Rotman Canada Research Chair in Philosophy of Science, Core member at the Rotman Institute of Philosophy, and Core member at the Brain and Mind Institute at the University of Western Ontario. For 2012-13, Dr. Anderson is a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, at Stanford University. His primary areas of research include an account of the evolution of the cortex via exaptation of existing neural circuitry (the "massive redeployment hypothesis"); the role of behavior, and of the brain's motor-control areas, in supporting higher-order cognitive functions; the foundations of intentionality (the connection between objects of thought and things in the world); and the role of self-monitoring and self-control in maintaining robust real-world agency.
In this episode, we talk neuroscience and cognitive science. We start with the evolution of the brain, and what is the best way to understand it, and go through the modularity approach, the idea of functional localization, and the triune brain model. We then move into mechanisms like neuromodulation, neuroplasticity, response to damage, and neural regeneration. We talk about Dr. Anderson’s massive redeployment (or reuse) hypothesis of brain evolution. Finally, we talk about how important interdisciplinarity is to studying the brain.

Dr. Agner Fog is associate professor of computer science at Technical University of Denmark. Dr. Fog does research in Evolutionary Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology, Social systems and Computer Science. His current project is 'Theory of cultural change based on evolutionary psychology, evolutionary biology, and cultural evolution.' He’s the author of “Warlike and Peaceful Societies: The Interaction of Genes and Culture”, and “Cultural Selection”.
In this episode, we talk about cultural evolution. We start by comparing cultural evolution to biological evolution, and we then discuss memetics extensively. We talk about how science works from a cultural evolutionary perspective, the differences between genes and memes, and types of selection that cannot be expressed as memes. We get into media, social media, and fake news; and politics, and the power of money. We ask if cultural evolution is intelligent, how we can explain differing levels of conflict between societies, and how the environment influences social organization. We also go through the cultural evolution of different kinds of religion (animism, polytheism, and monotheism), and we ask if cultural evolution moves linearly, and if we still have empires.

Dr. Ann-Sophie Barwich is Assistant Professor of History and Philosophy of Science and Cognitive Science at Indiana University Bloomington. She is a cognitive scientist and empirical philosopher & historian of science, technology, and the senses. She divides her brain-time between the Department of History & Philosophy of Science and the Cognitive Science Program. Estimated begin of lab (EEG/Olfactometry) in early 2021. She’s the author of Smellosophy: What the Nose tells the Mind.
In this episode, we focus on Dr. Barwich’s book, Smellosophy. We talk about the complexity behind the sense of smell, including the molecular complexity of the olfactory stimulus, receptor genes, its neuroscience, comparing smell with other senses, smell and memory, and smell and decision-making. In the second part of the talk, we deal with general questions in neuroscience and philosophy of mind (and philosophy of neuroscience), like functional localization, modularity of mind, qualia, mapping, and if we experience the real world. Dr. Edward Watts is presently the Vassiliadis Professor of Byzantine Greek History at UC San Diego, where he was formerly Co-Director of the Center for Hellenic Studies. His research interests center on the intellectual and religious history of the Roman Empire and the early Byzantine Empire. He is the author of several books on ancient history, the most recent one being Mortal Republic: How Rome Fell Into Tyranny. He also has a new book coming out in 2021, The Eternal Decline and Fall of Rome: The History of a Dangerous Idea.
In this episode, we focus on Mortal Republic. We go through the several different political organizations that Rome had – the kingdom, the republic, and the empire -, and some of their major players, like the patricians, the Gracchi brothers (Tiberius and Gaius), and Julius Caesar. Dr. Gordon Gallup is Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Albany. He is best known for developing the mirror test, also called the mirror self-recognition test, or MSR, in 1970, which gauges self-awareness of animals. He also studied tonic immobility, or "animal hypnosis,". His later work on animal behavior focused on ethological approaches to the study of animal behavior under laboratory conditions. Since the 1990s, Dr. Gallup has researched human evolutionary psychology exclusively.
In this episode, we focus on evolutionary psychology. We talk about the evolution of in males and females, and the functions that it serves, sperm competition, intra-copulatory competition, the sedative and antidepressant properties of . We also tackle paternity uncertainty, and the mating strategies that men and women resort to, particularly applied to mate guarding and infidelity. Dr. Joseph LeDoux is the Henry and Lucy Moses Professor of Science, Professor of Neural Science, Professor of Psychiatry, and Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at New York University. His work is focused on the brain mechanisms of emotion and memory. Dr. Caleb Scharf is the director of the multidisciplinary Columbia Astrobiology Center at Columbia University. He works in the fields of exoplanetary science and astrobiology, and writes extensively about science for a popular audience. One ultimate goal of his research is to find planets that could harbor recognizable life, and to detect the presence of that life—an effort that falls under the banner of astrobiology.
In this episode, we talk about astrobiology and exoplanetary science. We start with a bit of the history behind astrobiology. We go through topics like what is a habitable zone; several hypothesis as to how life might have originated on Earth; places in our solar system and on exoplanets that could harbor life, with focus on Europa, Enceladus, and Mars, and how we can detect it. We talk specifically about the recent finding of phosphine on Venus. We finish with a discussion on the search for intelligent life.

Dr. Andrew Gallup is Assistant Professor of Psychology and the director of the Adaptive Behavior and Cognition (ABC) Lab at SUNY Poly. His research spans a variety of topics, including contagious behavior and comparative neuroanatomy, brain thermoregulation and vigilance, collective behavior and social cognition, aggression and sexual conflict, the evolution of cooperation, sports and athletic competition from an evolutionary perspective, biomarkers of Darwinian fitness, and the effects of neuromodulation on adaptive responses.
In this episode, we talk about aggression, and the evolution of yawning. We first tackle the evolutionary bases of aggression, and the social functions that it serves, and how we can apply this knowledge to combat bullying. We mention differences, and also how aggression changes across human development, with focus on men and testosterone. We then get into the evolutionary function of yawning, and ask if it really is socially contagious.

Dr. Hanno Sauer is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Utrecht University. His main research interests are in moral psychology and empirically informed metaethics. He is interested in whether and how we can bring empirical data from diverse disciplines such as social psychology, neuroscience or cognitive science to bear on questions of normative and/or metaethical interests, and what the limits of this approach are.
In this episode, we tackle lots of approaches, challenges and arguments in (meta)ethics. We basically go through some of the biggest questions that ethics and moral philosophy try to answer. We deal with the relationship between science and ethics, and the is-ought gap. We discuss intuitionism, moral realism, evolutionary psychology and moral relativism, and moral nihilism. We address the recent literature on human rationality. We talk about the anti-rationalist and the emotionist challenge. We touch on Moral Foundations Theory, and the implications it might have for ethics and moral philosophy. We get into the argument from agreement and the argument from disagreement, and the challenges they pose to moral realism. We also talk about the educated intuitions account of morality. Finally, we discuss if moral progress really exists.

Dr. Christopher Freiman is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the College of William & Mary. His research interests include democratic theory, distributive justice, and immigration. He’s the author of two books, Unequivocal Justice, and the most recent one, Why It’s OK to Ignore Politics. His work has appeared in venues such as the Australasian Journal of Philosophy, Philosophical Studies, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, The Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy, Politics, Philosophy, and Economics, and The Oxford Handbook of Political Philosophy.
In this episode, we focus on Why It’s OK to Ignore Politics. In the first part of the interview, we discuss voting behavior (why people decide to vote, and to abstain from voting); how difficult it is for people to have enough knowledge to make good political decisions (including politicians and scientific experts); politically motivated thinking; the social costs of political participation; and local politics. We address some challenges to Dr. Freiman’s position. Toward the end, we talk about the therapeutic benefits of ignoring politics, libertarianism, and effective altruism.

Dr. Kristina Durante is an associate professor of marketing, Marketing Department Vice Chair, and the marketing Ph.D. program coordinator at Rutgers Business School. She is a social psychologist interested in the biology of decision-making. Her research lies at the intersection of social psychology, evolutionary biology, and consumer decision-making. Dr. Durante’s research program focuses on how our evolved biology (ancestral ecology and internal physiological systems) and our modern social environment interact to influence behavior.
In this episode, we focus on ovulation, and women’s mate preferences and consumer behavior. We discuss how female intrasexual competition changes across the ovulatory cycle, and how that manifests in terms of consumer choices and health-related risky behavior. We talk about how we should think about the relationship between our evolved psychology and the modern conditions we live in. We refer to what happens to women’s consumer patterns in a situation of economic decline. In the final part of our talk, we discuss how women can improve their mate preferences, to be more in line with modern conditions, and also how they might improve their current relationships.

Dr. John Hoffecker is Fellow of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR). He specializes in archaeology and human paleoecology. His primary research focus is the global dispersal of anatomically modern humans, which began more than 50,000 years ago in Africa. He is the author of several books, including Modern Humans: Their African Origin and Global Dispersal (2017).
In this episode, we focus on Dr. Hoffecker’s book. We cover some of the major topics of the book, including: the importance of the human hand and the vocal tract in our evolution, and particularly for the development of culture; what are modern humans; Out of Africa migrations for both species before and after H. sapiens; the technology H. sapiens needed for the migrations to be possible; the evolution and interaction with Neanderthals and Denisovans; the origins of H. sapiens; the reasons behind the migrations; the extinction of megafauna; and human geographic races.

Dr. Niels Dingemanse is Tenured Professor in Behavioural Ecology in the Department of Biology at the Ludwig Maximilians University, Germany. He conducts evolutionary behavioral ecology research, asking questions about the adaptive evolution of behavioral strategies, and their genetic architectures, within an ecological context. His research is motivated by behavioral ecology, life-history, and quantitative genetics theory, and seeks to test predictions and assumptions of adaptive theory using observational and experimental approaches in the laboratory and the wild.
In this episode, we focus on animal personality. We discuss the relationship between ecology and evolutionary biology, the evolution of behavioral traits, and behavioral plasticity. We then get into personality, and go through its behavioral genetics, social roles, and ecological aspects individuals respond to.

Dr. Stuart Russell is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley, where he also holds the Smith-Zadeh Chair in Engineering. He founded and leads the Center for Human-Compatible Artificial Intelligence there. His current concerns include the threat of autonomous weapons and the long-term future of artificial intelligence and its relation to humanity. Dr. Russell is co-author of the most popular textbook in the field of artificial intelligence: Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach used in more than 1,400 universities in 128 countries. His most recent book is Human Compatible: Artificial Intelligence and the Problem of Control.
In this episode, we talk about artificial intelligence. We start with what intelligence is, and what would human-level AI look like.
