Dr. Allan Horwitz is Board of Governors Professor in the Department of Sociology and Institute for Health, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research at Rutgers University. He has also chaired the Mental Health and Medical Sociology Sections of the American Sociological Association, as well as the Psychiatric Sociology Section of the Society for the Study of Social Problems. His research has focused on the sociology of mental health and illness. In addition, he has published several books including What’s Normal? Reconciling Biology and Culture (Oxford University Press, 2016).
In this episode, we focus on “What’s Nomal?”. We first discuss issues with the discipline of sociology, and the difference between it and anthropology. We talk about the history of the contention between biology and culture. We then run through several examples of social phenomena explored in the book, like incest taboos, first names, cowardice and courage, grief, sexuality and gender, and mental illness. We also ask what is normality, and discuss the concept of evolutionary mismatch, and some examples it applies to, related to human health and human psychology. Dr. Horwitz explains his Harmful Disfunction approach to social phenomena. Toward the end, we talk about how we can improve scientific disciplines that are either centered on biology or culture.

Dr. Gregg D. Caruso is Professor of Philosophy at SUNY Corning and Honorary Professor of Philosophy at Macquarie University. He is also the Co-Director of the Justice Without Retribution Network (JWRN) at the University of Aberdeen School of Law. His research interests include free will, agency, and responsibility (both moral and legal), as well as philosophy of mind, cognitive science, neuroethics, moral psychology, criminal law, punishment, and public policy. His books include Rejecting Retributivism: Free Will, Punishment, and Criminal Justice (2021), Just Deserts: Debating Free Will (w/Daniel C. Dennett) (2021).
In this episode, we focus on the two books: Just Deserts, and Rejecting Retributivism. First, we give an overview of the philosophical positions on free will, with a focus on incompatibilism, and we talk about luck. We discuss degrees of free will. We then talk about the link between free will and morality; praise and blame; if people need to believe in free will to be moral; how our legal and penal systems work, and how they should change; if we need to punish wrongdoers. Finally, we go through a lengthy discussion about how a new system could replace the penal systems based on retributivism, and we ask if we should nudge people.

Dr. Christopher Kavanagh is an associate professor in the College of Contemporary Psychology at Rikkyo University and a researcher in cognitive anthropology at the Institute of Cognitive & Evolutionary Anthropology (ICEA) at the University of Oxford. Currently he is based in Japan where he conducts research in collaboration with Masaki Yuki’s Culture, Social Ecology, and Psychology Lab in Hokkaido University. His research interests include East Asian religions, ritual behavior, and the bonding effects of shared dysphoria. He is co-host of the Decoding the Gurus podcast.
In this episode, we talk about some topics in the cognitive science of religion, and WEIRD psychology. We start by defining religion, and talk a bit about its evolutionary and cultural foundations. We discuss how religion is practiced, and distinguish between orthopraxic and orthodoxic religions. We mention modes theory, and the best ways of studying religious rituals. We focus specifically on high-arousal rituals. We discuss minimally counterintuitive ideas. We talk about how relational mobility can explain certain aspects of religion. We address how people practice religion in Japan, and its supposed atheistic nature. Finally, we discuss WEIRD psychology, and the problem with distinguishing between individualist and collectivist societies.

Thomas Coleman III is PhD student at Coventry University, and a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Bialystok as part of the Society and Cognition Unit. He draws on multiple approaches from across the sciences and humanities, to study the origins, development, and maintenance of (non)religious worldviews. His research focuses on three areas: Identifying and measuring components of nonreligious worldviews; computer simulated models of the cognitive and social dynamics leading to (non)belief in supernatural agents; investigating how and why moral motivations are stereotypically attributed to religious, as opposed to nonreligious factors.
In this episode, we talk about the psychology of believes and nonbelievers. We start with some of the psychological differences between religious people and atheists. We deal with the case of agnosticism. We discuss phenomena like absorption and mentalizing. We talk about worldviews, and fatalism and nihilism. We also go through what we can learn from pilgrimage studies, the four different kinds of religious orientation, and where atheist derive value and meaning from. Toward the end, we discuss the evolutionary bases of atheism, and Thomas tells us about a Postdoc project he is part of: Religion, Ideology & Prosociality: Simulating Secularising Societies.

Dr. Timothy Lenton is Professor of Climate Change and Earth System Science at the University of Exeter and Director of the Global Systems Institute. He has over 20 years of research experience in studying the Earth as a system, and developing and using models to understand its behavior. He is particularly interested in how life has reshaped the planet in the past, and what lessons we can draw from this as we proceed to reshape the planet now. These topics are covered in his books ‘Earth System Science: A Very Short Introduction’ (OUP, 2016) and (with Andrew Watson) ’Revolutions that Made the Earth’ (OUP, 2011).
In this episode, we talk about Revolutions that Made the Earth. We go through topics like: the intimate relationship between geology and life; the origins of life (in hydrothermal vents); what Dr. Lenton, in the book, calls the “critical steps” model of life; multicellular and complex life; the evolution of social life; culture; what is special about humans; the development of agriculture, and its impact on the planet; the Anthropocene, and when it started; new revolutions in the future; and if life on Earth was inevitable.

Dr. Laith Al-Shawaf is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS). Before, he was an Assistant Professor at Bilkent University in Turkey and a Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin, Germany. Laith has taught and conducted research in several different countries, and is a member of the Arab-German Young Academy (AGYA), as well as an academic adviser at Ideas Beyond Borders (IBB).
In this episode, we focus on a recent article of his published on Areo Magazine - Evolutionary Psychology: Predictively Powerful or Riddled with Just-So Stories?. We first tackle the misconception of evolutionary psychology’s predictions, hypotheses and theories being nothing but just-so stories. We mention hypotheses that have been falsified in evolutionary psychology. We discuss the emotions of anger and disgust, and address the controversy surrounding the domains of disgust. We talk about error management theory. In the final part, we discuss cultural psychology, the influence of culture on human psychology, and how evolutionary psychology deals with culture. We also address the WEIRD problem in Psychology, and more particularly in evolutionary psychology.

Dr. Menelaos Apostolou is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Nicosia, Cyprus. He’s the author of a new book, The Evolution of Same- Attraction.
This is my second interview with Dr. Apostolou, where we focus on The Evolution of Same- attraction. We start by discussing the evolution of sexual reproduction, and we talk a lot about sexual attraction (its evolution; if it occurs on a continuum; if it is fluid; and the genetic basis and possible environmental factors behind its development, including the fraternal birth order effect). We talk about homosexuality in ancient societies, and in hunter-gatherer societies. We discuss tolerance and intolerance of same- attraction. Dr. Apostolou presents his Weak Negative Selection Pressures and Positive Selection Pressures Hypotheses for the high prevalence of same- attraction in human societies. We also talk about why men prefer women who like other women. We discuss a hypothesis for why the Catholic Church is intolerant toward same- relations. We ask why Western societies are tolerant of same- attraction, and how it will evolve in the future. Finally, we discuss if people can apply this knowledge to develop a better understanding of their own sexual attraction and their relationships.

Dr. Andrew Berry is a lecturer in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology. He is an evolutionary biologist with a particular interest in Alfred Russel Wallace. His research combined field and laboratory methods to detect positive Darwinian selection (i.e. adaptive evolution) at the molecular level in natural populations. He has published two books: Infinite tropics: an Alfred Russel Wallace Anthology, with a foreword written by Stephen Jay Gould, and DNA: The Secret of Life with James Watson.
In this episode, we talk about the history of evolutionary biology. We start with the early developments by Darwin and Wallace, and we also mention some precursors to evolutionary biology and even some early evolutionary biologists before Darwin and Wallace. We then get into Mendelian genetics, and the development of population genetics. Finally, we talk about the path that let to the development of the modern evolutionary synthesis in evolutionary biology.

Dr. Stanley Fish is Professor of Law at Florida International University and Visiting Professor of Law at Cardoso Law School. In addition to being one of the country’s leading public intellectuals, Professor Fish is an extraordinarily prolific author. Professor Dr. Fish has written for many of the country’s leading law journals. including Stanford Law Review, Duke Law Journal, Yale Law Journal, University of Chicago Law Review, Columbia Law Review, and Texas Law Review. His books include There’s No Such Thing as Free Speech, and It’s a Good Thing, Too (1994); and The First: How to Think About Hate Speech, Campus Speech, Religious Speech, Fake News, Post-Truth, and Donald Trump (2019).
In this episode, we focus on free speech. Dr. Fish presents his thesis against the idea that free speech exists, and we discuss its details. We start with a bit of Dr. Fish’s background and where his interest in free speech comes from, and also a definition of free speech. We talk about John Stuart Mill’s position, and the history of the political struggle for free speech. We discuss freedom of speech in the context of academia and the media. We ask if it makes sense to distinguish speech from action, and also address the distinction between freedom of speech and freedom of inquiry. Toward the end, Dr. Fish explains why he thinks “philosophy does not matter”.

Dr. Arthur Glenberg is Professor in the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University, an emeritus professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a member of INICO at the Univeridad de Salamanca. He does basic research in cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience with a focus on developing theories of embodied cognition in the areas of language, education, and social processes. In addition, he and his colleagues at ASU have developed an embodied reading comprehension intervention (EMBRACE) for English language learning children in the early elementary grades. Dr. Glenberg has authored a textbook (in its third edition), an edited volume, and over 100 peer-reviewed articles.
In this episode, we talk about embodied cognition. We start by situating embodied cognition historically, and in the broader landscape of cognitive science. We talk about how work on AI and animal models can inform embodied cognition. We ask where embodied cognition places itself in terms of the nature/nurture debate. We then get into more specific questions, about how we go from the body to concepts; emotions; mental simulation; simulation, action, perception, and language; mirror neurons; unifying explanations at the cognitive, social, and cultural levels; and rethinking the teaching of reading, math, and science.

Dr. Stefaan Blancke is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Tilburg University, Netherlands. He studies the diffusion of (pseudo)scientific beliefs from an epidemiological perspective. His research focuses on the psychological and environmental factors that shape and constrain the development and distribution of these beliefs in the history and philosophy of science, science education and the public understanding of science. He is also interested in the philosophy of cultural evolution and the role of reasons in cultural phenomena such as science, morality and the self.
In this episode, we talk about philosophy of science. We focus on the demarcation problem, the scientific method, and how to distinguish science from pseudoscience. We also talk about the evolutionary bases of pseudoscience, and how cultural attraction theory applies to the diffusion of pseudoscientific and scientific beliefs. We discuss if evolutionary psychology is really a science. Finally, we talk a little bit about selves as cultural attractors.

Dr. Andrew Delton is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and the Center for Behavioral Political Economy at Stony Brook University. His research is at the intersection of political science, evolutionary psychology, and behavioral economics. Topics include collective action and public goods, generosity and redistribution, voting and political mobilization, partisanship, risk and time preferences, and emotions such as anger, compassion, and shame. Methods include behavioral economic games, population-based surveys, decision making tasks, implicit social cognition measures, game theoretic analysis, agent-based simulations, and cross-cultural data collection.
In this episode, we talk about political science through an evolutionary lens. We go through topics like welfare tradeoffs from an evolutionary perspective; the welfare state, and when people are for and against it; the emotion of compassion, and the role it plays in politics; free riding on public goods, and how people deal with free riders; partisanship, and voting behavior; and economic redistribution. Toward the end, we talk about the insights evolutionary psychology brings to political science.

Dr. Steven J. Heine is Distinguished University Scholar and Professor of Social and Cultural Psychology at the University of British Columbia.
In this episode, we talk about Cultural Psychology. We start with some basic questions, regarding the field of cultural psychology, and what is culture. We then go through several topics like: where does cultural variation come from?; ways of classifying different cultures; differences in psychological mechanisms influenced by culture, and if these are permanent; a sensitive period for acculturation; and how cultures have changed over time. We talk about specific psychological mechanisms whose universality has recently been questioned, including: the endowment effect; the similarity-attraction effect; overconfidence; cognitive dissonance; the fundamental attribution error; and how people experience mental illness. Toward the end we also discuss how ideas spread in societies, and I ask Dr. Heine what are some of the most interesting questions that Cultural Psychology has yet to answer.

Dr. Stearns specializes in life history evolution, which links the fields of ecology and evolutionary biology, and in evolutionary medicine. His books include “Evolutionary Medicine” (Sinauer, 2015) with Ruslan Medzhitov, “Evolution, an introduction” (Oxford, 2000, 2nd Ed 2005) with Rolf Hoekstra, “Watching, from the Edge of Extinction” (Yale, 1999) with his wife Beverly Peterson Stearns, “The Evolution of Life Histories” (Oxford, 1992), and two edited volumes, “Evolution in health and disease” (Oxford, 1998, 2nd Ed 2008) and “The Evolution of and its Consequences.”
In this episode, we talk about life history theory, and evolutionary medicine. We discuss life history theory extensively, including how it links ecology to evolutionary biology, and r/K-selection. We talk about individual variation in life history strategies, phenotypic plasticity, and culture. We then get into evolutionary medicine, where we talk about evolutionary mismatch and diseases of the modern world, and evolutionary public health. We end with a question from a patron.

Dr. Christian List is Professor of Philosophy and Decision Theory at LMU Munich and Co-Director of the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy. He’s the author of Why Free Will Is Real.
In this episode, we talk about Why Free Will Is Real. We start with some basic questions, like what is free will, and what is an agent. We then get into the moral side of things, and talk about moral responsibility and the law. We address three major challenges do free will (the “challenge from radical materialism,” the “challenge from determinism,” and the “challenge from epiphenomenalism”). We discuss mind-brain dualism and emergentism. Finally, we ask if free will exists in other living beings, in nonliving entities, and in robots and advanced AI.
