Dr. Vibeke Ottesen is a Norwegian criminologist with an interest in how nature and nurture combined create human behavior. She has a popular science blog – Biosocial - where she comments on news, scientific findings and literature relevant to her subject – more often than not with an evolutionary informed approach to understanding the subject matter.
In this episode, we talk about criminal behavior from an evolutionary perspective. We first get into some of the basics of evolutionary theory that help explain criminal behavior. We talk about cross-cultural evidence about criminal behavior, and more specifically homicide, and also about some of the complications that arise from differences in how countries collect data. We discuss the importance of distinguishing between different categories of homicide. We talk a lot about the Scandinavian countries during the interview, particularly how gender equality might influence rates of intimate partner violence and homicide, and the gender equality paradox. We explore differences in criminal behavior. We discuss filicide and neonaticide, and why there are differences between biological parents and stepparents. We also tackle suicidal behavior. Finally, we discuss ways of preventing homicide, and also why it is so hard to communicate evolutionarily-informed science to the general public.

Dr. Ilana Redstone is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Redstone's work has focused on legal permanent residents to the United States. Dr. Edward Slingerland is a Professor of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. His most recent book is Drunk: How We Sipped, Danced, and Stumbled Our Way to Civilization.
In this episode, we focus on Drunk. We first talk about alcohol consumption during our evolutionary history. We discuss the particular case of East Asians, and their difficulty in metabolically processing alcohol. We compare alcohol to other intoxicants, and talk about its social benefits, considering that humans are communal, creative and cultural. We mention the role it might have played in the development of the arts, and also how it is used in religious rituals. We discuss the negative effects of alcohol, and how people moderate its use. We talk about how experience pleasure for pleasure’s sake is also a good thing, and how Nietzsche praised Dionysian experiences. We also talk about prejudices against alcohol, and go through some of the evolutionary mismatches we face in our modern industrialized societies, with focus on the presence of distilled liquors and drinking in isolation. Finally, we discuss possible alternatives to alcohol, and how we should expose young people to alcohol.

Dr. Andrew Norman teaches philosophy at Carnegie Mellon University. He works on the conceptual and historical foundations of humanism. He has published widely on the nature of reason and the teaching of wisdom, and written books on critical thinking and the structure of dialogue. He is the author of Mental Immunity: Infectious Ideas, Mind-Parasites, and the Search for a Better Way to Think.
In this episode, we focus on Mental Immunity. We first get into what cognitive immunology is, and some aspects of how our cognition works, like epistemic vigilance, and the fact that our reasoning functions better in social contexts. We discuss how we determine that something is a “bad idea”. We also discuss what reason is, and how we can determine what a “reasonable belief” is. We talk about critical thinking, and ideological thinking. We then go into how we can justify holding beliefs that are not supported by the evidence, and the psychological benefits of “wrong” beliefs. We talk specifically about religion, the Enlightenment, and moral values. Finally, we discuss strategies to improve cognition, both individually and collectively, including the concept of “mind vaccine” and heard immunity.

Dr. Aiyana Koka Willard is a Lecturer in the Centre for Culture and Evolution at Brunel University London. Her research focuses around the culture and cognitive origins of supernatural and religious beliefs. She is particularly interested in how thinking about minds and causal reasoning is related to supernatural beliefs. Her current research focuses on witchcraft, karma, and evil eye beliefs.
In this episode, we talk about the anthropology and cognitive science of religion. Dr. Darcia Narvaez is a Professor of Psychology Emerita at the University of Notre Dame. She has written extensively on issues of character and moral development. Dr. Narvaez’ research explores questions of species-typical and species-atypical development in terms of wellbeing, morality, and sustainable wisdom. Her 2014 book - Neurobiology and the Development of Human Morality - won the 2015 William James Book Award from the APA and the 2017 Expanded Reason Award for research. Dr. Tim Maudlin is Professor of Philosophy at New York University. Her has interests primarily focused in the foundations of physics, metaphysics, and logic. Dr. Andreas Elpidorou is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Louisville. He specializes in the philosophical study of the mind and has published extensively on the nature of emotions (especially, boredom), consciousness, and cognition. He is best known for his work on the function and value of boredom. He is the co-author of Consciousness and Physicalism: A Defense of a Research Program (Routledge, 2018), the co-editor of Philosophy of Mind and Phenomenology: Conceptual and Empirical Approaches (Routledge, 2016), and the author of the recent book, Propelled: How Boredom, Frustration, and Anticipation Lead us to the Good Life.
In this episode, we focus on Propelled, and talk about boredom, frustration and anticipation, from a philosophical perspective. To put things into perspective, we first talk about Robert Nozick’s experience machine, and what it tells us about the role of negative emotions. We then address boredom, frustration and anticipation, how they work, and their relationship with other mental phenomena, like the experience of time, preferences, envy, the IKEA effect, memory, and worldviews like optimism and pessimism. Dr. Bart J. Wilson is the Donald P. Kennedy Endowed Chair in Economics and Law at Chapman University. He is a founding member of the Economic Science Institute and founding member and Director of the Smith Institute for Political Economy and Philosophy. His research uses experimental economics to explore the foundations of exchange and specialization and the origins of property. Another of his research programs compares decision making in humans, apes, and monkeys. He is the author of The Property Species: Mine, Yours, and the Human Mind.
In this episode, we focus on The Property Species, and talk about Dr. Wilson’s work on this subject more broadly. We first discuss property from an evolutionary perspective, and the endowment effect. We ask if property is a human universal. We then talk about sharing, exchange, trade, and specialization. In this episode, we talk about how memory develops in children and how it works. We start with some basics about memory development. We Talk about how we rewrite our memories every time we recall them, and memory sharing and memory-sharing styles. We discuss the existence of repressed memories, and how false memories can be engendered. We introduce a bit of an evolutionary perspective, to try to understand why our memories fail in these domains. We also talk about autobiographical memory and its relation with the “self”. Finally, we discuss some of the problems with eyewitness testimonies.

Dr. Brent W. Roberts is a Professor of Psychology and Director of the Center for Social and Behavioral Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Roberts's research has focused on determining the replicable patterns of continuity and change in personality traits across adulthood, the life experiences associated with changes in personality traits over time, and the significance of these changes for individual functioning. Dr. Roberts also conducts research on psychometric issues, in particular how to measure the traits of conscientiousness and narcissism, and more recently, how to best assess socio-emotional skills.

Dr. Musa al-Gharbi is a Paul F. Lazarsfeld Fellow in the Department of Sociology, and a Mellon-Sawyer Fellow on Trust and Mistrust of Experts for the Interdisciplinary Center on Innovative Theory and Empirics (INCITE), in partnership with the American Assembly, at Columbia University. Dr. David Papineau is Professor of Philosophy at King's College London, having previously taught for several years at Cambridge University where he was a fellow of Robinson College. His new book is The Metaphysics of Sensory Experience.
In this episode, we focus on The Metaphysics of Sensory Experience. We first define sensory experience, discuss its conscious nature, and talk about false sensory experiences, like illusions and hallucinations. We ask if sensory experience is primarily about objects of subjects, and we also define what an object of perception is. We discuss the relationship between metaphysics and epistemology. We talk about different theories in the metaphysics of sensory experience, including naïve realism, representationalism, and sense-datum theories. We detail Dr. Papineau’s qualitative view of sensory experience, and ask if it has anything to say about concepts and consciousness. We talk about the distinction between sensory experience and thought. Finally, we discuss if answering questions in the metaphysics of sensory experience has any implications for metaphysics more generally.

Dr. David Buss is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. He’s one of the founders of the field of evolutionary psychology. His primary research focus is on strategies of human mating. He’s the author of many books, including The Evolution of Desire, and the first textbook in Evolutionary Psychology, Evolutionary Psychology: The New Science of the Mind. His most recent book is When Men Behave Badly: The Hidden Roots of Sexual Deception, Harassment, and Assault.
In this episode, we focus on When Men Behave Badly. We first discuss what sexual conflict is, from an evolutionary perspective, and the evolutionary roots of behaviors like sexual deception, harassment and assault. We refer to sociocultural perspectives about sexual conflict, and how they complement evolutionary psychology. Throughout the interview, we touch on rape, mate guarding behavior, and mate value discrepancies and their effects. We also talk about evolutionary mismatches in sexual conflict. We touch on possible evolutionary explanations for the #metoo movement and the incel movement. Finally, we discuss possible strategies to prevent sexual violence, and also ask if people can use evolutionary psychology to improve their relationship satisfaction.
