Dr. Ethan Porter is an assistant professor at the George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs. His research has appeared or is forthcoming in Political Communication, Journal of Politics, Political Behavior, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Politics, Groups and Identities and Journal of Experimental Political Science. He has also written for The New York Times, The Washington Post and other popular publications. His research interests include public opinion, political communication, political psychology and experimental design. He is the author of False Alarm: The Truth About Political Mistruths in the Trump Era, and The Consumer Citizen, which investigates the ways in which everyday consumer decision-making affects political attitudes and behavior.
In this episode, we focus on The Consumer Citizen. We discuss how consumer behavior influences political behavior, how people think about politics, and the phenomenon of conspicuous consumption. We cover some of the concepts presented in the book, like alignability, consumer fairness, operational transparency, and taxpayer receipts. Dr. Elly Vintiadis is a philosopher of mind and psychiatry at Deree, the American College of Greece. Her work focuses on the mind, its products and disorders, and the nature of their dependence on the social environment. She is mainly interested in what mental disorders can tell us about the nature of the mind, and in emergence and explanation, but her research also extends to epistemology, metaphilosophy and animal ethics. She is the author of three books, including Philosophy by Women: 22 Philosophers reflect on Philosophy and Its Value.

Dr. Kristen Syme is research associate at the Faculty of Behavioral and Movement Sciences at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She received her BA in anthropology from the University of Delaware where she developed an interest in using evolutionary theory to investigate mental health and behavioral phenomena that are diagnosed and treated as diseases and deviations according to the Western medical paradigm. She conducted her MA research on suicidal behavior in 53 cultures and received her MA in 2014. Her research interests broadly concern the evolved interpersonal functions of psychological and behavioral phenomena. Her MA thesis tested two evolutionary models of suicidal behavior against the ethnographic record, and my dissertation research is a continuation of this project.
In this episode, we talk about mental disorders from an anthropological perspective, suicidal behavior, and leadership. We start by mentioning how to think about mental disorders as cultural constructs. We discuss mental illness in modern society. We ask if mental disorders are diseases. We then get into suicide, and discuss it from an evolutionary perspective, including the bargaining and inclusive fitness models of suicide. We also talk about preventing suicide, and the power imbalance in the mental health professional/patient relationship.

Dr. Daniel A. Bell is Dean of the School of Political Science and Public Administration at Shandong University. Dr. Bell received the Huilin Prize in 2018. He is the author of Just Hierarchy: Why Social Hierarchies Matter in China and the Rest of the World.
In this episode, we focus on Just Hierarchy. We first discuss what is a hierarchy, and what makes for a just hierarchy. Throughout the conservation, we refer to different kinds of hierarchies: relations between intimates; relations between citizens; relations between states; relations between humans and nonhuman animals; and relations between humans and AI. We talk about the progressive conservative perspective to hierarchy presented in the book. We discuss the differences between Chinese hierarchy and hierarchies in the West, and also how it relates to hierarchies in other Eastern Asian countries. We also ask what could be some of the reasons behind China’s international success. Finally, we discuss what the West could learn from China.

We discuss cultural evolution, how it works in different domains, and things like rates of innovation. We ask why societies rise and fall. We discuss the role religion plays in society. We also talk about how to make sense of some of the statistics presented in the book, particularly the ones related to standing armies, collective rituals, monuments, and cultural tools like calendars, law codes, and bureaucracy. Finally, we ask if it is possible to use these date to understand contemporary events and to predict future events.

Dr. Robin Huw Crompton is professor of musculoskeletal biology at the University of Liverpool in the Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease. He has developed the Fossil Footprint Archive jointly with Matthew Bennett of Bournemouth University.
In this episode, we talk about the evolution of human bipedality. We start by talking about the locomotion of our common ancestor with chimpanzees, and go through some of the main steps in the evolution of our musculoskeletal system. During the conversation, Dr. Crompton shows some fossils to the camera. We discuss if we can learn something about the evolution of our locomotion by studying the environments we evolved in, and also our diet. We talk about some of the hypotheses relating to the evolutionary pressures behind our bipedalism. Finally, we talk about modern musculoskeletal diseases.

Dr. Carole Hooven is Co-Director of Undergraduate Studies and Lecturer in Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. Her research Interests include behavioral endocrinology and evolution of differences in humans (physiology, behavior and cognition). She is the author of T: The Story of Testosterone, the Hormone that Dominates and Divides Us.
In this episode, we focus on T. We start with some basics, and talk about the physiological processes testosterone participates in, and the activational-organizational paradigm. We then discuss the behavioral effects of testosterone, and what we know about them in infants and other closely-related species. We get into Wingfield’s Challenge Hypothesis. We talk about conditions like Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (CAIS) and Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH). We ask how is defined. We get into some political questions, like transgender athletes, and testosterone in sports. We discuss the concept of “toxic masculinity”. Dr. Tim Clutton-Brock is Professor in the Department of Zoology at Cambridge University. He is known for his comparative studies of the behavioral ecology of mammals, particularly red deer and meerkats. He currently works in three main areas: The evolution of vertebrate breeding systems; Population regulation and the control of population stability in large mammals; Natural and sexual selection in natural populations.

We talk about how people’s beliefs have much more to do with social signaling than the ideas themselves. We discuss the distinction between healthy dissenting and contrarianism and trolling. We ask if governments should make efforts to defend our epistemic commons. We discuss some of the strongest objections to the thesis of the book, and also the tension between the necessary social isolation to achieve enlightenment and the fact that we need other people to reason better. We refer to the dangers of political engagement and moralizing discussions contaminating public discourse. Finally, we talk about the virtue of honesty, and the problem with convictions, from a Nietzschean perspective.

Dr. Mark Stoneking directs the Human Population History Group in the Department of Evolutionary Genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. He is also Honorary Professor of Biological Anthropology at the University of Leipzig. He, along with his doctoral advisor Allan Wilson and a fellow researcher Rebecca L. Cann, contributed to the Out of Africa Theory in 1987 by introducing the concept of Mitochondrial Eve.
In this episode, we talk about evolutionary genetics. We start by talking about the discipline of evolutionary genetics, and the kinds of questions it tries to answer. We then talk about the Mitochondrial Eve, the interaction between nuclear and mitochondrial DNA, and how to study paternal lineages. We discuss human genetic diversity, and if the concept of “race” is a scientific one. We then address how genetics can help us understand cultural evolution, and talk specifically about is it is possible to study the evolution of languages through genetics. We tackle other questions about our evolution, including if it is possible to tell which hominin species we evolved from, and why we find less diversity out of Africa. We discuss a study Dr. Stoneking did on the Mlabri, and if contemporary hunter-gatherer societies are good models of ancient ones. Finally, we talk about evidence of recent genetic evolution.

Dr. Erik Kimbrough is an associate professor of economics at the Smith Institute for Political Economy and Philosophy in the Argyros School of Business and Economics at Chapman University. His research uses experiments to explore the underpinnings of prosociality, cooperation and conflict resolution and to identify the origins of economic institutions such as property rights. He has also worked on finding ways to increase the supply of transplantable organs, measuring the spitefulness of individuals, understanding the sources of asset price bubbles, evaluating individual theory of mind, and capturing the discovery process underlying specialization and trade, among other topics.

Dr. Kevin Mitchell is Associate Professor of Genetics and Neuroscience at Trinity College Dublin. He’s the author of Innate: How the Wiring of Our Brains Shapes Who We Are.
In this episode, we talk about psychological epigenetics. We first address what is epigenetics, and when people first identified epigenetic mechanisms or theorized about them. We refer to several mechanisms, involving chromatin, methylation, and others. We discuss if epigenetics fits into the larger puzzle of evolutionary theory. We talk about the problems and limitations of studies of transgenerational epigenetics done in mice and humans, and we refer to the Dutch famine and Irish famine studies. We refer to how psychoanalysts deal with epigenetics, and what it would take for a behavior to modify the epigenetic profile of an individual and then get transmitted to their offspring. We mention other fads in neuroscience, like neuroplasticity and mirror neurons. We discuss modularity of mind. Finally, we talk about how the science of epigenetics should be communicated to the general public. We end with a brief teaser to Dr. Mitchell’s next book.

Dr. Lauren Brent is Associate Professor in the Centre for Research in Animal Behaviour at the University of Exeter. She is a biologist interested in the evolution of sociality. Her research asks why social relationships are formed and how they are maintained. Her work focuses on highly gregarious, group-living animals. She works mostly with data collected from wild or free-ranging groups, and specialize on study systems with uniquely long-term datasets. She uses a diverse set of methods, including techniques from ethology, evolutionary biology, quantitative and functional genetics, life-history evolution, endocrinology, comparative psychology, and cognitive neuroscience.
In this episode, we talk about the evolution of sociality. We first ask what sociality is. We then go through topics like: individual variation in how animals establish social relations; what social complexity is; the importance and benefits of social connections; how kin selection and reciprocal altruism influence social organization; indirect connections; friendships; how prolonged life after reproduction evolved; a case study from 2012 about how rhesus macaques reacted to a group member that died of a fatal attack; and neuroethology.

David Pearce is a prominent figure within the transhumanism movement and one of the co-founders of the World Transhumanist Association, currently rebranded and incorporated as Humanity+. His self-published internet manifesto, The Hedonistic Imperative (1995), outlines how pharmacology, genetic engineering, nanotechnology and neurosurgery could converge to eliminate all forms of unpleasant experience from human and non-human life, replacing suffering with "gradients of bliss". Pearce calls this the "abolitionist project".
In this episode, we talk about transhumanism, the hedonistic imperative, and the abolitionist project. We first get into concepts like negative utilitarianism, hedonism, and gradients of bliss. We discuss the goals of the abolitionist project, and the living beings it would target. We talk about the different technological approaches to abolishing suffering, like pharmacology, genetic engineering, nanotechnology, neurosurgery, becoming cyborgs, Nozick’s experience machine, and immortality. We discuss to what extent these technologies are sufficiently well-developed, or if we would need to wait more time. We discuss why social, economic, and political reforms are not enough. We tackle questions regarding how our human experience would change. We discuss how we should deal with people who would prefer to opt out of the abolitionist project. Finally, we ask if we have less suffering in the world nowadays.

Dr. Saul Smilansky is a Professor at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Haifa, Israel. He works primarily on normative and applied ethics, the free will problem, and the meaning of life. He is the author of Free Will and Illusion (Oxford University Press 2000), and 10 Moral Paradoxes (Blackwell 2007).
In this episode, we focus on moral paradoxes. We first define them, and then we go through some of them, including misfortunes, the paradox of beneficial retirement, punishment, feeling sorry when bad things happen, moral complaint, the obligation to have children and antinatalism, and moral worth. Toward the end, we talk about a normative moral theory that Dr. Smilansky developed, which he calls “Designer Ethics”.
