Dr. Jaimie Krems is Assistant Professor of Psychology at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Krems is a social psychologist with interdisciplinary training. Her research draws on theoretical perspectives from social psychology, behavioral ecology, evolutionary biology and anthropology, as well as animal behavior to investigate how people use cues to strategically navigate their social worlds and meet their social goals.
In this episode, we talk about female friendships, stereotypes and prejudice, and religion and monogamy. We first get into the evolution of female sociality, and how female establish friendships among themselves. We talk about aggression in friendships, and social factors that influence levels of aggression, like economic inequality and ratios. We discuss the evolutionary bases of stereotypes and prejudice, with a focus on the stereotypes people hold about women who have casual . Finally, we talk about the relationship between preferred mating strategies and religiosity, and anti-atheist prejudice.

Dr. Edward Watts is presently the Vassiliadis Professor of Byzantine Greek History at UC San Diego. His research interests center on the intellectual and religious history of the Roman Empire and the early Byzantine Empire. We talk about some issues with taking modern hunter-gatherers as representative of ancestral societies, and with some ideas in evolutionary psychology, like the concept of the environment of evolutionary adaptedness. Other topics include aggression as an illustrative example of how people theorize about differences; human nature; and the overall importance of Darwin’s theories.

Dr. Andrew Berry is a lecturer in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology. He is an evolutionary biologist with a particular interest in Alfred Russel Wallace. His research combined field and laboratory methods to detect positive Darwinian selection (i.e. adaptive evolution) at the molecular level in natural populations. He has published two books: Infinite tropics: an Alfred Russel Wallace Anthology, with a foreword written by Stephen Jay Gould, and DNA: The Secret of Life with James Watson.
This is the second part of our 2-part episode on the history of evolutionary theory/biology.
In this episode, we start with population genetics, its early developments, how it led to the development of inclusive fitness theory, and what happened after the discovery of the double-helix structure of the DNA, what we learn about evolution by natural selection by understanding genetics, and how to detect adaptive evolution on the level of the genome. We then discuss speciation, what we know about it, and some of the controversies there. We address specifically the question of why there are more species more densely packed as one moves from the poles to the Equator. Finally, we talk about what we can learn by studying evolution in islands.

In this episode, we talk about Darwin, Wallace, On the Origin of Species, and The Descent of Man. We first talk about On the Origin of Species, where Darwin’s ideas came from, and in what ways they differ from Wallace’s. We then get into The Descent of Man, and go through some of the most important topics covered there, including sexual selection, our primate origins, the evolutionary origins of our mental faculties, race and differences, cultural evolution, and (cultural) group selection. We also talk about how Darwin was a precursor of evolutionary psychology. We discuss the eusocial insects, and if their behavior is best understood as the result of inclusive fitness/kin selection or group selection. Finally, we give a summary of some of the most important things Darwin got right and wrong.

Dr. Nichola Raihani is Professor of Evolution and Behavior at University College London. Her research considers the evolution of cooperation in nature. She was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology in 2019. Her first book is The Social Instinct: How Cooperation Shaped the World.
In this episode, we focus on The Social Instinct. We first discuss the structure of the book, and why the focus is on cooperation. We talk about the mechanisms used to explain the evolution of cooperation – kin selection, reciprocal altruism, and group selection. We then get into what a family is from a evolutionary perspective, and discuss the role of mothers and fathers, and cooperative breeding. We question the model of the nuclear family, and also talk about grandmothers. We ask why men live so long. We discuss why people help unrelated others, and why we are so uncharitable to those doing good deeds. We ask if we are ultimately selfish. Other topics include: interdependence; why we care so much about what other people think of us; social comparison; and the ability to join together and rebel against tyrannical leaders. We wrap up with discussing how we can promote large-scale cooperation.

Dr. Benjamin M. Friedman is the William Joseph Maier Professor of Political Economy, and formerly Chairman of the Department of Economics, at Harvard University. He joined the Harvard faculty in 1972. Dr. Sander van der Linden is Professor of Social Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Cambridge and Director of the Cambridge Social Decision-Making Lab. His research interests center around the psychology of human judgment, communication, and decision-making, including social norms and networks, attitudes and polarization, reasoning about evidence, and the public understanding of risk and uncertainty.

Dr. Cécile Sarabian is a Postdoctoral researcher in Cognitive Ecology at Kyoto University. She investigates parasite avoidance behaviors and their effectiveness in non-human primates and other animals via field and lab experimentation/observations. She is generally interested in the origins of hygiene and disgust in humans and in the potential applications of disgust into the field of Conservation.
In this episode, we talk about disgust and conservation. We start by discussing disgust from an evolutionary perspective. We talk about different disgust-related behaviors, and hygiene. We mention briefly how an evolutionary perspective can inform how people deal with the covid-19 pandemic, and how they react to pathogens in this context. We delve into the discussion surrounding the different domains of disgust (pathogen disgust, sexual disgust, and moral disgust). We also do a bit of comparative psychology, and explore to what extent we can compare non-human primates to us. We also talk about differences in disgust, and human universals in disgust reactions. Finally, we talk about new avenues to explore when it comes to the role disgust might play in animal conservation.

Dr. Christian Pieter Hoffmann is Professor of Communication Management and Political Communication at the Institute of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Leipzig, Germany. Dr. Scott A. Small is the Director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Columbia University, where he is the Boris and Rose Katz Professor of Neurology. He is appointed in the Departments of Neurology, Radiology, and Psychiatry. With an expertise in Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive aging, Dr. Small’s research focuses on the hippocampus, a circuit in the brain targeted by these and other disorders, notably schizophrenia. He has pioneered the development and application of high-resolution functional MRI techniques that can pinpoint parts of the hippocampus most affected by aging and disease. He is the author of Forgetting: The Benefits of Not Remembering.
In this episode, we focus on Forgetting. We first talk about some of the basics of how memory works. We then talk about forgetting, bot its benefits, and conditions where it gets pathological, like Alzheimer’s. We also talk about PTDS and autism. Dr. Jessica Thompson is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Yale University. Dr. Thompson specializes in human evolution, and especially those aspects that can be revealed through the analysis of ancient animal bones found at archaeological sites (zooarchaeology). She leads the Malawi Ancient Lifeways and Peoples Project in Malawi, central Africa, where she has maintained a field site since 2009. This multidisciplinary work combines archaeological science, evolutionary theory, and hunter-gatherer ethnography to develop and interpret the first cultural and paleoenvironmental chronologies in the region that span the transition from the last Ice Age.
In this episode, we talk about human evolution and hunter-gatherer societies. We first talk about the Malawi Ancient Lifeways and Peoples Project. We then discuss several aspects of our evolution, including: our origins; what a modern human is; the so-called “cognitive revolution”; how the last Ice Age impacted our evolution; “race”, and its implications for medicine; and if modern hunter-gatherers are good models of the societies we evolved in. Finally, we discuss a recent paper on the environmental impact of anthropogenic fires, and how humans impacted their environments during our evolutionary history more generally, including the extinction of megafauna.

Crystal Lee is a PhD candidate at the History / Anthropology / Science, Technology, and Society (HASTS) program at MIT, a researcher at the Visualization Group in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), and a Fellow at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society. Dr. Ewa Dabrowska is Professor at Friedrich Alexander University, Erlangen, and in the Department of English Language and Linguistics at Birmingham University. Her research interests include cognitive linguistics, language acquisition, the mental status of rules, and individual differences in linguistic knowledge. She has published monographs on the semantics of case and the relationship between linguistics and other disciplines studying language, and numerous articles. She is the editor of Cognitive Linguistics and Vice President of the UK Cognitive Linguistics Association.

Dr. Luke Russell is Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Sydney. His research explores moral philosophy and he has written about evil, forgiveness, virtue and vice. Dr. Russell teaches ethics, moral psychology, and critical thinking, as well as running the University's high school philosophy course, Mind and Morality. His new book is Being Evil: A Philosophical Perspective.
In this episode, we focus on Being Evil. We ask what evil is, and go through several different criteria we can use to say that a particular action or person in evil, including its extremity, the consequences, incomprehensibility, people’s reactions, the perpetrator’s motives, and others. We talk about depictions of evil in fiction, and ask if they are useful. We discuss some possible psychological traits of evil people, and refer to Arendt’s banality of evil. Finally, we discuss if people are born evil, and what we can do to help them.

Neste episódio, focamo-nos no “História do Português Desde o Big Bang”. Seguimos mais ou menos o esquema do livro, e começamos por falar do porquê de ir até ao Big Bang, e também de alguns aspetos da nossa história evolutiva, e das origens da linguagem humana. Entramos numa discussão acerca de como se distingue entre diferentes línguas, e também quando é que uma língua começa, e se é possível dizer se, e quando, acaba. Abordamos as origens do Português, incluindo a forma como evoluiu do latim, e recuamos até ao proto-indo-europeu. Falamos da variação linguística entre falantes da mesma língua, e das dificuldades em uniformizar a língua. Abordamos especificamente as frustrações dos “puristas da língua”, e de como a forma como se fala pode ser uma questão de sinalizar estatuto e distinção social. Finalmente, questionamos se será possível planear uma língua, e como o Português e as línguas europeias poderão evoluir no futuro.
